Guru Pournima
గురు పౌర్ణమి
📅 July 10, 2026 (Friday)
Guru Pournima is the sacred full moon day dedicated to honouring one's Guru (spiritual or academic teacher). It falls on the full moon of Ashadha month and commemorates Maharshi Vyasa — the compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata.
Significance
In Vedic tradition, the Guru is the dispeller of darkness (ignorance). 'Guru' literally means heavy — one who is weighty with wisdom. Maharshi Vyasa is considered the Adi Guru (first teacher) who organised the Vedas into four parts. On this day, disciples express gratitude to their teachers — a practice fundamental to Gurukula tradition.
