Vedic Samskara
Shraddha & Tarpan
Ancestral Rites Ceremony
⏰ Death anniversary, Pitru Paksha, Amavasya
Significance
Shraddha and Tarpan are the most important of all ancestral rites in Vedic tradition. They express profound gratitude to departed souls (Pitrus), ensure their peace in the other worlds, and maintain the sacred continuity between the living and the departed — one of the foundational duties (Pitru Dharma) of Hindu life.
What Happens During the Ceremony?
The Purohit guides the family through offering water (Jala Tarpan) to ancestors, chanting their gotram and name. Pinda Daan (rice balls) are offered on a riverbank or at home. The Brahmin priest is fed a meal. Vedic mantras for peace (Shanti) are chanted for the departed souls.
