Chudakaranam
First Haircut Ceremony
⏰ 1st or 3rd year
Significance
Chudakaranam (also called Mundan or Tonsure) is the ceremony of the child's first haircut. Hair from the womb is believed to carry past-life karma and impurities. Removing it in a sacred ceremony cleanses the child's field and prepares the body and mind for fresh spiritual imprints.
What Happens During the Ceremony?
Performed at a temple or at home, the barber (Nai) performs the haircut under the guidance of the Purohit. The hair is offered to a sacred river or a temple tank. Vedic mantras are chanted for the child's health, intelligence, and long life. The child's head is then anointed with turmeric and sandalwood paste.
