Vedic Samskara
Antyesti
Final Rites & Funeral Ceremony
⏰ At the time of death and after
Significance
Antyesti (the last Samskara) represents the final act of love and respect for the departed soul. It is a complete Vedic process of returning the five elements of the body back to the cosmos, while the soul is guided onward with prayers and mantras. Far from morbid, it is viewed in Hindu tradition as a sacred transition — Moksha, or liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
What Happens During the Ceremony?
The process includes: Aachamanam, Pavitrikaran, Dashagatra Shraddha (10-day rites), Sapinda Kriyas (ancestral integration rites), and the final Shanti karma. The Purohit guides the family through every stage with mantras from the Rigveda and Yajurveda. After 13 days, the Shraddha ceremony marks the formal conclusion.
