Vedic Samskara
Annaprashanam
First Solid Food Ceremony
⏰ 5th–7th month after birth
Significance
Annaprashanam marks the transition from liquid to solid food — a major milestone in the child's development. In Vedic tradition, food is not merely nutrition but sacred nourishment that forms the body and influences the mind. This ceremony blesses the child's digestive system and prays for abundant, healthy nourishment throughout life.
What Happens During the Ceremony?
A Homa is performed. The Purohit chants mantras invoking Annapurna and Vishnu. The grandfather or father feeds the child the first morsel of cooked rice mixed with ghee, honey, and curd. Sometimes a 'destiny tray' is presented with objects like a pen, soil, gold, and books to see what the child reaches for first — a playful prediction of future inclinations.
