Vedic Samskara

Aksharabhyasam

First Writing Ceremony

Age 3–5

Significance

Aksharabhyasam is one of the most beloved Samskaras — the initiation of learning and formal education. The child's first letters are guided by the Purohit on a tray of raw rice or sand, invoking Goddess Saraswati (goddess of learning), Lord Ganesha (remover of obstacles), and the Guru (teacher).

What Happens During the Ceremony?

A puja is offered to Saraswati and Ganesha. The Purohit or a respected elder holds the child's hand and guides it to write 'Sri Ganesaya Namaha' (or local equivalent) on a tray of rice or sand. The child then writes in a new notebook. Family blesses the child with gifts for education.
